Zhaan was a character inhabiting a mental video game-like device based on the memories of John Crichton. Crichton and Chiana encountered the character when Chiana pulled him into the game against Crichton's will. At first glance, Zhaan appeared to be laid back and easygoing, living out of his hippie-like van in a parking garage. His treatment of an ailing Crichton, however, left something to be desired. Pulling the antenna out of Crichton's head seemed to make things worse. Zhaan then tried to treat Crichton with a substance milked from one of his loomas which Chiana realized was acid just in time. After feeding him a healing substance from the other looma, Zhaan panicked and threw Crichton and Chiana from his van, before driving away in fear of retribution from the Ogre.
Later, when Crichton and Chiana were quickly moving through the game, they got by Zhaan by turning the van's light on him. Mesmerized by the light, Crichton was able to run the problematic plant man over with his own van.
After Crichton finally realized that the true princess he was to find was not Aeryn Sun at all, Crichton returned to the male Zhaan. Using a sword to reveal the true princess, Crichton sliced the hideous Zhaan in half, and the true Zotoh Zhaan emerged.
