[edit] Overview
The Pictomancer is an interdimensional being who observes the events of the known universe, carefully recording them in indecipherable hieroglyphs within a mystical book. His race is vaguely related to that of the Interdimensional Entity that Moya encountered in the rift of Starburst, but is at the same time completely different. It seems that, to a certain extent, actual events in the universe and its infinite unrealized realities are influenced by the mind of the Pictomancer; however, the extent of this influence is not known. The Pictomancer denies having any actual power over reality, but his actions seem to belie this claim.
[edit] Influence in Season 5 (CAUTION! Spoilers!)
The Pictomancer was undoubtedly watching the events of Farscape ever since the first season and before, but his first definitive action was performed on behalf of Joolushko Tunai Fenta Hovalis. Contrary to popular belief, the Interion was not killed by the Scarran bomb that was fired at Arnessk; in fact, she wasn’t even on Arnessk when it detonated. She had been captured many solar days beforehand by the Scarrans themselves, who had learned (through the interception of a Peacekeeper broadcast) that she was known to be a traveling companion of the wanted human John Crichton. The Scarrans thus kidnapped Jool and replaced her with a Bioloid (which soon went feral and later died during the bombing of Arnessk in Jool's place). Jool herself was taken to the Scarran military base Zobrazit and tortured about Crichton's whereabouts; when it was realized that she truly did not know where Crichton now was, the Scarrans determined instead to use her as a bargaining chip against the human instead.
The Pictomancer somehow seemed to engineer the meeting between Jool and the Kalish Zak'kun Zeromus Zetetra Zalera Zakkura, and there are suspicions that when they managed to escape from Zobrazit on board a Scarran Stryker, the Pictomancer might even have influenced the wormhole that opened up and swallowed the Stryker whole. Jool and Zak'kun encountered the enormous Leviathan Bertha when they were spat out of the wormhole at last, and were brought on board by none other than Utu-Noranti Pralatong. Aboard Bertha, Jool learned that the wormhole had somehow spat her and Zak'kun twelve cycles into the future, and Zak'kun found himself forcibly bonded psychically to Bertha, who had no Pilot. Things only became more bizarre as Bertha nearly fell into a black hole due to a malfunctioned Starburst as she bonded with Zak'kun and was rescued by, of all people, Mele-On Grayza, who had been stripped of her title by Peacekeeper High Command, lost her child in stillbirth, and realized that her Heppel oil gland was going to kill her in a few cycles if she did not remove it soon.
The unusual quartet began to make its way towards the planet of Nezia in order to find a surgeon capable of removing the highly complex Heppel gland (although Jool was more than willing to leave Grayza to find a solution herself, Noranti insisted). Along the way, they stopped by the planet of Mz'ter'nt and battled a deadly creature called the Tzzat'Slun, who needed to possess corporeal beings in order to consume raw meat as it desired; they fought it off with the help of Astri Mazerak, a Pi'Chu'An who joined their crew. Not long thereafter, Bertha was infiltrated by a colony of sentient mineral grains--living sand--that nearly smothered them all in its primordial hunger. They battled the insane Doctor Muxxel, a jaundiced and jaded surgeon who wished to harvest Leviathan parts to make inoculations out of them and hypnotized Astri to do it, and freed from his experiment cells a homicidal Halosian named Ran. They were also boarded by a squad of Kilaattik chasing a Chironexxan known as Memdi, and only managed to defeat the Kilaattik owing to Grayza and Ran's expertise with pulse weaponry.
When they reached Nezia, they were not only unable to find a surgeon for Grayza, but they saw a massive bolt of blue light that Grayza and Noranti recognized as a wormhole weapon blast, which created a black hole in a nearby solar system and destroyed it. Fortunately, the black hole lacked the multiplicative effect of the proper weapon Crichton had used to end the Peacekeeper/Scarran War, but it was still far closer than any race ought to be. Putting two and two together, Jool figured out that the weapon must have been fired from Pathfinder space, located across the Uncharted Territories and a great expanse of lonely space known as the Great Divide.
Thus began Bertha's journey towards Pathfinder space.
